What factors change the cost of restoring marble?
- Size: a single vanity top and a whole floor are very different amounts of work
- Damage: light dullness is a different job from deep scratches, heavy etching or chips and cracks
- Stone type: marble, travertine, limestone and terrazzo each behave differently, and the stone's condition matters
- Access: stairs, elevators, furniture to move and how easily equipment can reach the space
- Finish wanted: a honed finish and a polished finish are different amounts of work
- Extras: sealing, grout work or repairs done alongside the restoration
Why can't a restoration company quote one price per square foot?
Two floors of the same size can need very different work. One may only be dull from foot traffic, while the other has old coatings, deep etching and cracked pieces. Any flat rate would either overcharge the first or leave the second underquoted, which is why a specific estimate is more useful than a general figure.
How do I get an accurate estimate?
Start with clear photos of the whole area and close-ups of the worst damage, plus a rough idea of how large the area is and the type of stone if you know it. Say whether you want a honed or a polished finish. Texting photos to (631) 939-9655 is a quick way to start.
Is restoration or replacement the cheaper option?
It depends, but restoration works on the stone you already have, so it often avoids the demolition, new material and installation that replacement involves. Replacement is sometimes needed when stone is badly cracked or loose, which is worth having looked at. For what restoration involves, see marble honing vs polishing.
When should I call a pro?
General advice only goes so far, because the right fix depends on the stone, how deep the damage goes and how the surface is used. If you are not sure what you are looking at, or the damage is more than light wear, a stone professional can look at it before anything is done that cannot be undone.
